Apple A13 Bionic vs Snapdragon 855 Plus
Every year Apple leaps to the new iPhones. Like every year, this year also Apple launched its new iPhones and named them – iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. As the name suggests the iPhone 11 Pro Max is the higher variant. Along with these iPhones, Apple also announced new SoC – Apple A13 Bionic as the successor of last year’s A12 Bionic. The A12 Bionic strongest and fastest SoC that outperforms Snapdragon 855 in terms of performance. But still, here we will compare Apple A13 Bionic vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC because customers want to know the difference between the Apple A13 Bionic and the Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset.
Snapdragon 855 Plus is the latest flagship and strongest chipset of Qualcomm till now and the Apple A13 Bionic is the world’s fastest and strongest SoC till now. How both of these chipsets perform against each other, to know about them we are comparing them. Let’s start knowing about them by starting the comparison.
Apple A13 Bionic SoC Features
First of all, let’s talk about the newer Apple A13 Bionic SoC in which the company has improved many features. In this SoC, the company has focused on power-efficiency and machine learning (ML) performance. The company claims that “The A13 Bionic is the fastest CPU ever in a smartphone,” adding that it also has “the fastest GPU in a smartphone,” too. It is also the most power-efficient SoC.
The Apple A13 Bionic chip uses the second-gen. 7nm process technology. It is not known whether this fabrication is the EUV N7+ node or the new improved iterative N7P node. It also packs 8.5 billion transistors which are a huge upgrade and 23 percent more than last year’s A12 Bionic which has 6.9 billion transistors.
The newer A13 Bionic contains a Hexa-core CPU and 2 machine learning accelerators which enables its 6 Cores to perform 6 times faster multiplication.
Speaking of CPU, the newer A12 Bionic has up to 20% faster and up to 40% CPU compared to the older A12 Bionic SoC. It is also capable to go up to one trillion operations per second. The company claims that the A13 Bionic SoC outperforms the Snapdragon 855 and Kirin 980 in terms of CPU performance.
The A13 Bionic SoC has the octa-core neural engine design the same as the A12 Bionic. But compared to the A12 Bionic, it is up to 20% faster and up to 15% power-efficient.
The GPU of A13 Bionic has 4 Cores the same as the A12 Bionic but it is metal optimized, 20% faster and 40% more power-efficient than the A12 Bionic. Onstage the company also compared the GPU of A13 Bionic where it outperforms the GPU of iPhone XR(A12 Bionic), Galaxy S10+(Snapdragon 855), Huawei P30 Pro(Kirin 980) and Google Pixel 3(Snapdragon 845).
The camera department is also improved of the new A13 Bionic, it got the “Deep Fusion” image processing feature to improve low to medium light photography using machine learning. This feature allows the smartphone to shoot four short images, four secondary images, and one long exposure image at a single click. After this process, the final image comes with enhanced details and noise reduction.
Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC Features
In the comparison of Apple 13 Bionic, Snapdragon 855 Plus brings an octa-core CPU but still the A13 Bionic is stronger than Snapdragon 855 Plus. Speaking of the features of Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus, these are its specs –
Snapdragon 855 Plus has an octa-core CPU which is a 64 bit architecture based CPU. The company calls it Kryo 485 CPU which contains high-performance and high-efficiency CPUs. Its high-performance cores include 1 ARM Cortex-A76 Gold Core clocked at 2.96GHz and 3 Cortex-A76 Gold Cores running at up to 2.42GHz while the high-efficiency cores contain 4 Cortex-A55 Silver Cores operating at up to 1.80GHz clock speed.
Here the CPU of Snapdragon 855 Plus is stronger but not than the CPU of A13 Bionic. The CPU of Apple A13 Bionic is much better than the CPU of Snapdragon 855 Plus.
Speaking of the GPU section where Snapdragon 855 Plus has the Adreno 640 GPU with a minimum frequency of 250MHz and a maximum frequency of 700MHz. With this GPU, Snapdragon 855 Plus can’t beat the newer A13 Bionic because the A13 Bionic has much stronger and improved GPU than Snapdragon 855 Plus.
Speaking of architecture, the Snapdragon 855 Plus is designed on the 7nm manufacturing process. Here it is now known which SoC is more power-efficient because Apple has not cleared that the fabrication is the EUV N7+ node or the new improved iterative N7P node. But we assume A13 Bionic to perform better here than Snapdragon 855 Plus.
Camera and Optics
The Snapdragon 855 Plus comes with the same camera features as other Qualcomm SoCs. It has Qualcomm Spectra 380 image signal processor paired with a Hardware accelerator for computer vision. It can handle up to 22MP dual camera at 30fps with MFNR and ZSL and single camera up to 48MP at 30fps with MFNR and ZSL. Without MFNR and ZSL it can go up to 192MP single camera.
In the camera department, the A13 Bionic also has many major improvements over Snapdragon 855 Plus.
To performs all AI tasks, Snapdragon 855 Plus has Qualcomm Hexagon 690 Processor coupled with Hexagon Vector eXtensions, Tensor Accelerator, Voice Assistant, All-Ways Aware technology of the company. With these features, it has decent flagship AI performance. While on the other side, Apple has not told about the AI performance of the 13 Bionic SoC. But here we also assume A13 Bionic to have better AI performance than Snapdragon 855 Plus.
Now coming to the conclusion, Apple A12 Bionic outperforms Snapdragon 855 in terms of performance. The A13 Bionic is a successor of A12 with many improvements. The A13 Bionic is the world’s strongest and fastest SoC till now and there is no SoC available in comparison to it. Snapdragon 855 Plus is also unavailable to beat it in any aspect. So in the overall comparison of Apple A13 Bionic vs Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC, the newer A13 Bionic comes as the winner.
