Apple A13 Bionic vs Kirin 990 5G
Every year in September, Huawei, and Apple launch their new products. This year also Huawei unveiled its Kirin 990 SoC in IFA 2019 in Berlin while Apple also launched its three new iPhones – iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max along with new Apple A13 Bionic SoC. All these three iPhones are based on the A13 Bionic SoC. Speaking of A13 Bionic chipset, as its name suggests it is the successor of last year’s A12 Bionic SoC. It offers many improvements over the A12 Bionic. The A12 Bionic was the strongest chipset having stronger features over Snapdragon 855 – a flagship SoC of Qualcomm. Now the A13 Bionic is the strongest SoC over the all smartphone chipsets.
As we told you in starting, Huawei also launched its Kirin 990 5G SoC with integrated 5G Modem. It also has a non-5G variant. Here we will compare Apple A13 Bionic vs HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G Chipset. Apple A13 Bionic Features
The A13 Bionic is the fastest SoC ever provided in any smartphone. It handles day-to-day tasks quickly. The new A13 Bionic SoC is based on TSMC’s second-generation 7nm process technology and packs 8.5 billion transistors which is a huge upgrade and 23 percent more than A12 Bionic whereas the A12 Bionic has 6.9 billion.
This time the company has focused on power-efficiency and machine learning.
The A13 Bionic has a hexa-core CPU and features 2 machine learning accelerators to 6 CPU Cores to perform the chipset 6 time faster multiplication.
Compared to the older A12 Bionic, the newer A13 Bionic brings 20 percent faster and up to 40 percent power-efficient CPU. It is also capable to reach up to one trillion operations per second. Apple Senior Director of iPhone Marketing Kaiann Drance said “the A13 Bionic outperforms the Snapdragon 855 and Kirin 980 in terms of CPU performance.”
The newer A13 Bionic uses the octa-core neural engine design like the older A12 Bionic but it is up to 20% faster and up to 15% power-efficient than A12 Bionic.
The A13 Bionic also has the “Deep Fusion” image processing feature which improves low to medium light photography using machine learning. The Deep Fusion feature allows the smartphone to shoot four short images, four secondary images, and one long exposure image at a single click. After that, the final photo comes with enhanced details and noise reduction.
HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G Features
On the other side, the Kirin 990 based on the 7nm EUV+ (TSMC) was launched recently and will power Huawei flagship Mate 30 and P series along with Honor affordable flagship. The Kirin 990 contains 10.3 billion transistors, eight CPU cores, 16 GPU cores, and three neural processing units based on Da Vinci architecture. Huawei also has done many major improvements in its Kirin 990 SoC. The Kirin 990 5G is 4.7 times better than Snapdragon 855 in terms of AI. On the AI Benchmark test, it scored 52403.
The CPU of Kirin 990 5G contains eight-cores dividing into three groups – big, middle and little. The big core group houses 2 ARM Cortex-A76 Big Cores clocked at 2.86GHz while the middle core group includes 2 Cortex-A76 Cores running at up to 2.36GHz and the little core group has 4 Cortex-A55 Little Cores operating at up to 1.96GHz clock speed.
The GPU of Kirin 990 5G integrates a 16 Core Mali-G76 GPU clocked at 2.86GHz. It is also optimized for gaming.
For AI, the company has done major improvements in the Kirin 990 over Kirin 980. It has a 3 NPUs(2 Big + 1 Small) to perform all AI tasks. The small NPU forks for always-on applications and the big NPU for demanding workloads. The Big+Small NPU configuration maintains the power efficiency. The Little NPU offers up to 24 times better power efficiency for tasks. The NPU of Kirin 990 is 2x times faster than its predecessors.
The Kirin 990 features a 5th Gen. ISP which has support for up to 64MP single camera and up to 40MP + 24MP dual cameras. It also can do the recording in 4K at 60fps. The company also offered a Noise Reduction feature called BM3D(Block Matching and 3D Filtering) which is generally used in DSLR. On the smartphone, it is the first time through this SoC. It will work to improve image noise reduction by 30% and video noise reduction by 20%.
As you have seen, the Kirin 990 5G is a stronger chipset but not than Apple’s A13 Bionic. The Kirin 990 5G offers many great features but the A13 Bionic is the strongest SoC on a smartphone till now. In this chipset, the company also has done many improvements which make it the strongest chipset. It got improvements in the CPU, CPU and Camera section. So in the overall comparison of Apple A13 Bionic vs Kirin 990 5G, the A13 Bionic is much better SoC compared to Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G.
