Samsung silently launched its new Exynos 980 SoC with a built-in 5G Modem. The new Exynos 980 features the latest ARM Cortex-A76 cores which are not available in any chipset before it until now. Having the latest CPU architecture, Exynos 980 is the strongest chipset till now. CPU & GPU Comparison
Starting with CPU of Exynos 980 which comes with 64-bit octa-core CPU having big & little cores combination. Its big cores include 2 ARM Cortex-A77 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and the little cores include 6 Cortex-A55 cores operating at up to 1.8GHz clock speed. This is the first CPU with Cortex-A77 cores.
On the other side, HiSilicon Kirin 980 also has a 64-bit octa-core CPU with big & little cores. Its big cores include 4 ARM Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.6GHz and the little cores houses 4 Cortex-A55 cores running at 1.8GHz clock speed.
The Exynos 980 has 2 high-performance cores with a little lower frequency while the Kirin 980 has a higher frequency of all cores. Here the Exynos 980 has only two better cores that have a lower frequency so the CPU performance of both chipsets is almost the same.
In the GPU section, the Exynos 980 is coupled with the Mali-G76 MP5 whereas the Kirin 980 also has Mali-G76 GPU with a peak frequency of 750MHz. Here the GPU of both chipsets is the same while the clock speed of the GPU of Exynos 980 is unknown until now.
Speaking of the fabrication process of the Exynos 980, it is built using the 8nm EUV FinFET whereas the Kirin 980 works on the 7nm fabrication process. The Kirin 980 is ahead over the Exynos 980 with 1nm because of which it is a more powerful and power-efficient chipset.

The Exynos 980 brings support for UFS 2.1 & eMMC 5.1 based storage and up to 10GB LPDDR4X RAM clocked at 2093MHz while the Kirin 980 supports 16-bit Quad-Channel LPDDR4X RAM up to 8GB clocked at 2133MHz and UFS 2.1 & UFS 3.1 based storage.
Speaking of camera support, the Exynos 980 can support 108MP single and 20MP + 20MP dual camera whereas the Kirin 980 can handle up to 48MP single and 40MP + 24MP dual camera sensors.
The Exynos 980 can record up to 4K UHD videos at 120fps.
In the case of display, the Exynos 980 has support for WQHD+ (3360×1440) displays whereas the Kirin 980 supports up to 4K UHD displays.

It allows AI-powered tasks to be processed right on the device rather than sending personal information to the server for further processing.
On the other side, HiSilicon Kirin 980 the world’s first chipset with a dual NPU. With the power of a dual-core NPU, it can recognize up to 4500 images in a minute. Having a dual NPU the Kirin 980 can easily compete with Exynos 980 and performs better than Exynos 980.
Connectivity Features Comparison
The Exynos 980 it the first chipset of the company with a built-in 5G modem. Using a 5G network it can capture a maximum download speed of 2.55Gbps and 1.28Gbps downloading speed. Whereas using a 4G network it can go up to 1Gbps in downloading using LTE Cat.16 and using LTE Cat.18 it can go up to 200Mbps in uploading.
On the other side, the Kirin 980 doesn’t support the 5G network, it only supports up to 4G. It can go up to 1.4Gbps in downloading using LTE Cat.21 and up to 200Mbps in uploading using LTE Cat.18. While other features like Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5, NFC, GPS/A-GPS, etc. are supported in both chipsets.
