South Korean company Samsung announced its Cortex-A77 core chipset and named it Exynos 980. This is the first chipset having an integrated 5G modem. The company launched this chipset without providing any official information. Having Cortex-A77 cores, this is the fastest chipset in the world. This is the latest flagship chipset of Samsung where Qualcomm also has its latest flagship chipset Snapdragon 855 Plus. Here we will compare Samsung Exynos 980 vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus and see which chipset is better between the Exynos 980 and the Snapdragon 855 Plus on-paper.
The Snapdragon 855 Plus was launched recently as a successor of Snapdragon 855. The Snapdragon 855 Plus is an overclocked version of Snapdragon 855. Many smartphones powered with this chipset are available in the market. The upcoming flagship smartphones of Samsung will be powered by Exynos 980 so we decided to compare these chipsets. By comparing these chipsets we will know the difference between the Exynos 980 and the Snapdragon 855 Plus. Let’s compare them.
Exynos 980 vs Snapdragon 855 Plus CPU & GPU
Start the comparison with the CPU section of the Exynos 980 it has an octa-core CPU based on 64-bit memory architecture which includes 2 Cortex-A77 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and 6 Cortex-A55 cores operating at up to 1.8GHz clock speed. The Cortex-A77 is the latest cores that are announced with this chipset. On the other side, Snapdragon 855 Plus also features a 64-bit octa-core Kryo 485 CPU which high-efficiency and high-performance cores. Its high-performance cores include one Cortex-A76 Gold core clocked at 2.84GHz, three Cortex-A76 Gold cores clocked at 2.42GHz and four Cortex-A55 Silver cores operating at up to 1.8GHz clock speed.
Here the Exynos 980 features 2 cores with the latest architecture and lower frequency than the Snapdragon 855 Plus whereas the Snapdragon 855 Plus features a higher frequency of all cores. The Exynos 980 has only 2 better cores only while the Snapdragon 855 Plus has a higher frequency so here both chipsets perform almost the same.
Coming to the GPU section, here the newer Exynos 980 features Mali-G76 MP5 GPU whereas the Snapdragon 855 Plus brings the Adreno 640 GPU with a base frequency of 250MHz and a maximum frequency of 700MHz. Here the GPU of Snapdragon 855 Plus can easily beat the GPU of the Exynos 980 because of which the Snapdragon 855 Plus will be capable to provide smooth gaming experience. So in the case of GPU, the Snapdragon 855 Plus is a better chipset than the Exynos 980.
Here the Exynos 980 is fabricated on the 8nm FinFET process whereas the Snapdragon 855 Plus is built using the 7nm manufacturing process. Here also the Snapdragon 855 Plus is a better chipset having a better manufacturing process. Being ahead with 1nm, the Snapdragon 855 Plus is a more power-efficient chipset than the Exynos 980.
To perform AI tasks, the Exynos 980 brings an integrated neural processing unit (NPU) and digital signal processor (DSP). This NPU is 2.7x faster than its predecessor. According to the company’s claims, the combination of NPU and DSP delivers new levels of on-device artificial intelligence. It allows AI-powered tasks to be processed right on the device rather than sending personal information to the server for further processing, resulting in quicker response with better data privacy and security.
At the same time, the Snapdragon 855 Plus has the Hexagon 690 Processor to perform AI tasks and it is coupled with Hexagon Vector eXtensions, Hexagon Tensor Accelerator, Qualcomm Hexagon Voice Assistant and Qualcomm All-Ways Aware technology. It is a 4th Gen. AI Engine of Qualcomm. Here the AI performance of both chipsets is expected to be equal. Both chipsets come with advanced AI features because of which both chipsets perform very well.
Exynos 980 vs Snapdragon 855 Plus Other Features
Looking at the camera section, here the Snapdragon 855 Plus has the Spectra 380 image signal processor which is capable to handle dual camera up to 22MP with MFNR & ZSL at 30fps and single camera up to 48MP with at 30fps with MFNR & ZSL. To go up to 192MP you have to compromise with MFNR & ZSL.
On the other side, Exynos 980 can handle up to 20MP + 20MP dual camera and single camera up to 108MP.
RAM & Storage
Here the Exynos 980 has support for Quad-Channel LPDDR4X RAM up to 12GB clocked at 2133MHz and storage types of UFS 2.1 & eMMC 5.1.
