A brief time ago Samsung announced its Exynos 980 chipset with an integrated 5G modem for flagship devices of 2020. Now the company launched another chipset Exynos 990 at its Samsung Tech Day 2019. As its name suggests it is an upgrade over Exynos 980 chipset. The new Exynos 990 is based on the 7nm EUV process technology and it will power the flagship devces of 2020 such as Galaxy S11 series.

Exynos 990 vs Exynos 980 CPU & GPU

CPU

Starting the comparison with the CPU of Exynos 990, it brings an octa-core CPU based on 64bit memory architecture and features 2 Exynos M5 Cores with an unknown clock speed, 2 Cortex-A76 Cores and 4 Cortex-A55 Cores. The clock speed of all the CPU cores of Exynos 990 is unknown.

On the other side, Exynos 980 also got an eight-core CPU based on 64bit memory architecture that includes 2 ARM Cortex-A77 Cores clocked at 2.20GHz clock speed and 6 Cortex-A55 Cores operating at up to 1.80GHz clock speed.

Here the Exynos 980 has 2 latest Cortex-A77 Cores while the newer Exynos 990 has 2 Custom Cores of the company. The CPU performance of both chipsets will be great but the newer Exynos 990 which is the successor of Exynos 980 could offer a better CPU performance compared to the Exynos 980 chipset. Manufacturing Process

Looking the the manufacturing process, the newer Exynos 990 is built using the company’s 7nm EUV process technology while the Exynos 980 is based on the 8nm FinFET process technology. Here the newer Exynos 990 offers the upgraded manufacturing process over the Exynos 980. It is more powerful and power-efficient chipset than Exynos 980.

Camera & Optics

Moving to the camera and optics, here the newer Exynos 990 got the support for single camera of up to 108MP and dual camera up to 24.8MP + 24.8MP while on the other side, Exynos 980 can handle up to 108MP single camera and dual cameras up to 20MP + 20MP.

RAM & Storage

In the case of RAM, the newer Exynos 990 has support for LPDDR5 RAM operating at up to 2750MHz and storage types of UFS 3.0 & UFS 2.1 while on the other side, Exynos 980 supports LPDDR4X RAM clocked at 2093MHz and storage types of UFS 2.1 & eMMC 5.1.

Display

In the case of display, Exynos 980 has suppport for WQHD+ displays with a maximum resolution of 3360×1440 pixels while the newer Exynos 990 supports WQUXGA (3840×2400) and 4K UHD (4096×2160) displays.

For handling AI tasks, Exynos 990 got a Dual-core NPU while the Exynos 980 has the Integrated Single NPU. Here also the newer Exynos 990 has better AI processing over Exynos 980 chipset.

Speaking of connectivity features, here both chipsets have support for 5G network. Speaking of Exynos 990, it integrates the Exynos Modem 5123 which uses LTE Cat24/22 to provide downloading and uploading speed. It can capture a maximum downloading speed of 3000Mbps and an uploading speed of 422Mbps. In downloading it can go up to 7350Mbps.

On the other side, Exynos 980 got an integrated 5G Modem which can deliver a maximum download speed of 2.55Gbps and 1.28Gbps of uploading speed. While using the 4G network it can provide a downloading speed of 1.4Gbps using LTE Cat.21 and 200Mbps uploading speed using LTE Cat.18. Other connectivity features like WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, FM Radio, etc. are same in both chipsets.
