The Kirin 990 has been officially launched. The company introduced this chipset in IFA 2019. The Kirin 990 chipset comes in two variants – 5G & non-5G variant. The 5G variant is more powerful than the non-5G variant. It has an integrated 5G Modem, better manufacturing process, and better CPU frequency. Also, it has a tiny difference in the NPU. Here we will compare HiSilicon Kirin 990 vs Snapdragon 845 chipset. We will compare its 4G variant with Snapdragon 845 because the Snapdragon 845 is a one-year-old flagship SoC of Qualcomm which supports 4G network. Kirin 990 vs Snapdragon 845 CPU and GPU

CPU

First of all let’s compare their CPU section, here the newer Kirin and the older Snapdragon 845, both have a 64-bit octa-core CPU. The CPU of Kirin 990 divides its cores into three groups. Its first group houses 2 ARM Cortex-A76 big cores clocked at 2.86GHz, the second group also includes 2 Cortex-A76 big cores. It has the difference in its clock speed which is 2.09GHz while the third group includes 4 Cortex-A55 little cores running at up to 1.86GHz clock speed.

While on the other side, the company named Kryo 385 to the CPU of Snapdragon 845 and that has two parts of its cores. The first part has high-performance cores which include 4 ARM Cortex-A75 Gold cores clocked at 2.80GHz clock speed while the second part features high-efficiency cores which include 4 Cortex-A55 Silver cores operating at up to 1.70GHz clock speed.

Here the newer Kirin 990 has the latest CPU cores that have better clock speed because of which the CPU performance will be better of HiSilicon Kirin 990 compared to Snapdragon 845. In short, the Kirin 990 has a better CPU than Snapdragon 845.

GPU

Comparing to the GPU section, here the newer Kirin 990 features ARM Mali G76 GPU with 16 Cores while the Snapdragon 845 has the Adreno 630 GPU. The company did improvements in the GPU of Kirin 990 because of which it outperforms the GPU of Snapdragon 855. Having a better GPU then Snapdragon 855, the Kirin 990 can easily beat the GPU of Snapdragon 845. Here the GPU of Snapdragon 845 can’t beat the GPU of Kirin 990.

Manufacturing Process

Here the newer Kirin 990 is built using the 7nm TSMC process technology while on the other side Snapdragon 845 works on the 10nm manufacturing process. Here again, the Kirin 990 wins having a better manufacturing process. It is ahead with 3nm over the Snapdragon 845 because of which it is more power-efficient and more powerful than the Snapdragon 845.

Kirin 990 vs Snapdragon 845 AI Capabilities

In the AI department, the Kirin 990 also brings many major improvements. It has a quad-core NPU based on the Da Vinci architecture. Before it, the Kirin 810 got the Da Vinci architecture because of which it outperforms the Snapdragon 855 and the Helio P90 in the case of AI. The Kirin 990 has better AI hardware than the Kirin 810 because of which it doesn’t let any chipset go ahead in terms of AI performance. There is no chipset available in the market in the competition of Kirin 990.

On the other side, the Snapdragon 845 has the Qualcomm Hexagon 685 DSP which provides a decent AI performance. So there is no competition of the AI performance of Kirin 990 and Snapdragon 845. Here the Kirin 990 easily beats the Snapdragon 845 in the case of AI processing.

Camera

Here the Kirin 990 also features improvements. It has a 5th Gen ISP which offers a 15% better power efficiency, 30% better Image Noice Reduction, and 20% better Video Noice Reduction. Using this ISP this chipset can support up to 64MP single camera and up to 40MP + 24MP dual camera. It also has a feature named BM3D (Block Matching and 3D Filtering) which offers a DSLR-level Image Noice Reduction. In a smartphone, these features will be provided the first time through this SoC.

At the same time, Snapdragon 845 ships with the Qualcomm Spectra 280 ISP which is capable to handle up to 16MP dual camera at 30fps with MFNR and ZSL. It supports a single camera up to 16MP at 60fps with MFNR and ZSL, up to 32MP at 30fps with MFNR and ZSL, up to 48MP with MFNR only and up to 192MP without MFNR and ZSL.

RAM and Storage

Here the newer Kirin 990 has support for LPDDR4X RAM clocked at 2133MHz and UFS 3.0 type of storage.
While on the other side, Snapdragon 845 supports up to 8GB 16 bit Quad-Channel LPDDR4X RAM clocked at 1866MHz and UFS2.1 & SD 3.0 types of storage.

Display

In this section, the Snapdragon 845 supports up to 4K Ultra HD displays while the details of Kirin 990 regarding the display section are unknown.

Kirin 990 vs Snapdragon 845 Connectivity Features

Connectivity-wise Kirin 990 has 4G LTE Modem which uses LTE Cat.21 for achieving a downloading speed of up to 1.4Gbps and an uploading speed of up to 200Mbps using LTE Cat.18.

While Snapdragon 845 has Snapdragon X20 LTE Modem which and captures a maximum downloading speed of 1.2Gbps using LTE Cat.18 and an uploading speed of up to 150Mbps using LTE Cat.13. For fast charging, it has support for Quick Charge 4 technology. Both chipsets have other remaining connectivity features such as WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPU, FM Radio, NFC, USB 3.1 and Type-C, etc.
