In the past few years, we have seen many premium smartphones for gamers. In those Razer was the first to bring a dedicated gaming smartphone. After that many smartphone manufacturers like Asus, Nubia, Black Shark(Xiaomi) followed this trend and brought their dedicated gaming smartphones. Seeing this trend of gaming smartphones, Qualcomm recently announced a new premium chipset Snapdragon 855 Plus an upgrade or overclocked variant of Snapdragon 855 for a premium smartphone. This new chipset of Qualcomm comes with a boost in performance for gamers.
But these chipsets and these smartphones come under the premium category. Everyone can’t afford them. Considering this problem and following the footsteps of Qualcomm, MediaTek has recently introduced its Helio G90 series including Helio G90 and Helio G90T chipsets. The company has announced this series for gamers who can’t afford flagship smartphones. In these chipsets, the company provided an enhanced gaming experience.
The Helio G90 series will directly compete with the Snapdragon 700 series of Qualcomm. But along with Qualcomm, there are also more chipsets maker available in the market like Kirin(Huawei) and Exynos(Samsung), from whose chipsets this series will compete. Here we will compare MediaTek Helio G90T vs Kirin 980 – a flagship chipset of HiSilicon(Huawei) and see the difference between Helio G90T and Kirin 980 chipsets. Helio G90T vs Kirin 980 CPU & GPU
Starting the comparison with CPU, in this section, the Helio G90T has a 64-bit CPU with eight cores. This CPU comprises 2 Cortex-A76 powerful cores clocked at 2.05GHz maximum clock speed and 6 Cortex-A55 efficiency cores running at 2.00GHz maximum clock speed. While on the other hand, HiSilicon Kirin 980 is also a 64-bit octa-core chipset that has CPU architecture of two clusters including big cores and little cores. Its big cores include 2 Cortex-A76 cores running at 2.6GHz for handling heavy tasks like mobile gaming and 6 Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.88GHz to perform in normal tasks like calling and web-browsing.
Here the first two cores are powerful in Kirin 980 while other 6 efficiency cores are better in Helio G90T. The Kirin 980 is a flagship chipset so it can’t let Helio G90T – a mid-range chipset to go ahead because it features many more improved and optimized features. Also, the difference in their efficiency cores is only a little bit not huge.
Moving on to the GPU section, in this section, the Helio G90T works having ARM Mali G76 3EEMC4 GPU with a maximum clock speed of up to 800MHz. This GPU is an upgrade over the IMG PowerVR GM 9446 GPU of Helio P90. It brings many upgrades compared to other SoCs present in MediaTek’s lineup like 4-core cluster GPU which you get on high-end chips like the Kirin 980 with the 10-core cluster.
While on the other side, Kirin 980 has the ARM’s Mali G76 MP10 GPU running with a maximum clock speed of up to 750Mhz. It uses 2nd Biforst Architecture and brings 10 clusters as the name suggests. In this section, also mid-range MediaTek Helio G90T can’t beat to flagship Kirin 980 chipset in terms of GPU.
Talking about their manufacturing process, Huawei flagship SoC Kirin 980 works on the 7nm manufacturing process which is much powerful while MediaTek Helio G90T still working on the 12nm manufacturing process. It has been a long time since the company has not made any improvement in the manufacturing process of its chipsets. Don’t know why the company is still building its chipsets on the same 12nm manufacturing process while other mid-range chipsets are working on the 8 or 10nm manufacturing process. The 12nm is not enough for a gaming chipset. So here the flagship Kirin 980 is ahead over Helio G90T.
Helio G90T vs Kirin 980 Supported Features
Speaking of the camera department, here also the Helio G90T brings some improvements. It got a triple Image Signal Processor which can support up to 64MP single camera sensor at 22.5fps. In terms of dual camera, it has support for 24MP + 16MP dual camera sensors at 30fps. While HiSilicon Kirin 980 features a 4th gen Image Signal Processor which includes multi-pass and multi noise reduction technology. Speaking of its camera the company has not released any official information regarding its camera support.
Here the Helio G90T is capable to support LPDDR4X RAM up to 10GB with a maximum clock speed of up to 2133MHz While Kirin 980 supports 4 Channel LPDDR4X RAM up to 10GB clocked at 2133MHz.
In this case, the Helio G90T supports UFS 2.1 and eMMC 5.1 types of storage while Kirin 980 supports UFS 2.1 based storage.
Here the Helio G90T supports up to Full HD+ and 21:9 displays at up to 90Hz while the details of Kirin 980 regarding display are unavailable.
Helio G90T vs Kirin 980 Artificial Intelligence
In the case of AI, Huawei was the first chipmaker company to use dedicated NPU in its chipset. The company was introduced to Kirin 970 in 2017 with a dedicated NPU engine. While in Kirin 980, the company has provided a dual-core NPU engine that can recognize up to 4500 images in a minute. It also includes features like Object Recognition, Object Detection, Image Segmentation, and Intelligent Translation.
On the other side, Helio G90T also brings improved AI features. It features dual APU of MediaTek clocked at 750MHz and its CPU, GPU and APU are combined with MediaTek HyperEngine Game Technology. Its combination of CPU, GPU and APU can deliver up to 1TMACs performance for smooth gaming experience and better power efficiency. The Helio G90T has improvements in AI but the Kirin 980 is a flagship chipset which comes with dual-core NPU engine which is stronger in handling AI tasks. So here also Kirin 980 easily beats Helio G90T.
In this section, MediaTek Helio G90 got 4G LTE Cat-12 modem which can capture a maximum download speed of up to 600Mbps and an upload speed of up to 150Mbps using LTE Cat-13. It also includes other features like Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, VoWi-Fi, Dual 4G VoLTE, FM Radio, Dual 4G VoLTE, etc.
On the other hand, the Kirin 980 is the world’s first chipset having LTE Cat.21 modem. Using this modem, it can provide up to 1.4Gbps downloading speed while with the Hi1103 it can capture a download speed of up to 1.7Gbps. Talking about its uploading speed, it can capture up to 200Mbps uploading speed using LTE Cat.18. It also features L1+L5 dual-frequency ultra-precise technology for better GPS functionality. Other options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5, NFC and many more, are also supported in it.
