Taiwanese chipmaker company MediaTek launches chipsets in mid-range under its Helio P series. All chipsets of the Helio P series offer great features and huge AI performance. The Helio P90 was launched in December 2018 and after almost one year, Oppo adopted this chipset in its Oppo Reno 2Z smartphone. This chipset also has huge AI performance. With the same CPU architecture, Qualcomm also has its one-year-old chipset Snapdragon 670. The performance of this chipset is also great, so we decided to compare MediaTek Helio P90 vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 chipset.

Both of these chipsets are mid-range chipsets and offer great features. By comparing these chipsets we will try to know which one is a better chipset between the Helio P90 and the Snapdragon 670. Helio P90 vs Snapdragon 670 CPU and GPU

CPU

First of all let’s compare the CPU section of both chipsets, here both have an eight-core CPU based on 64-bit architecture. Here Qualcomm gives a custom name to the CPU of its SoCs. To the CPU of Snapdragon 670, the company named Kryo 360 CPU. Speaking of MediaTek Helio P90 has an octa-core CPU featuring two clusters of its cores. The first is a big core cluster that includes 2 ARM Cortex-A75 Big Cores clocked at up to 2.20GHz while the little core cluster houses 6 Cortex-A55 Little Cores operating at up to 2GHz clock speed.

On the other side, the Kryo 360 CPU of Snapdragon 670 also divides its cores into two clusters – high-efficiency cores and high-performance cores cluster. The high-performance cores include 2 ARM Cortex-A75 Gold Cores clocked at up to 2GHz and high-efficiency cores have 6 Cortex-A55 Silver Cores running at up to 1.70GHz. Here both SoCs have the same CPU cores but MediaTek Helio P90 has a better clock speed of its cores because of which the CPU performance of MediaTek Helio P90 will be better than Snapdragon 670.

So in terms of CPU performance, MediaTek Helio P90 is a stronger chipset than Snapdragon 670 having higher CPU frequency.

GPU

Coming to the GPU section, here the Helio P90 incorporates a PowerVR GM 9446 GPU operating at up to 970 MHz while Snapdragon 670 integrates the Adreno 615 GPU. Here the GPU of Snapdragon 670 is stronger than the PowerVR GM 9446 GPU of Helio P90. The Adreno 615 offers a smooth gaming experience to Snapdragon 670. The PowerVR GM 9446 GPU also has a good gaming experience but here the Adreno 615 is ahead from PowerVR GM 9446 GPU.

Manufacturing Process

When it comes to architecture, almost all the mid-range SoCs of MediaTek have a 12nm manufacturing process. MediaTek Helio P90 is also fabricated on the 12nm manufacturing process while Snapdragon 670 works on the 10nm fabrication process which makes it a more power-efficient chipset than the Helio P90.

Helio P90 vs Snapdragon 670 Artificial Intelligence

When it comes to the AI performance, all the chipsets of Helio P series have huge AI performance. The first time the Helio P60 brought a dedicated APU, and after that, the Helio P70 came with upgraded APU 2.0 for improved AI performance. Now the Helio P90 also features APU 2.0 with Fusion AI Architecture. It has an AI performance of 1165GMACs.

On the other side, to perform all the AI tasks, Snapdragon 670 has the Qualcomm’s Hexagon 685 DSP coupled with the Hexagon Vector Processor and Qualcomm All-Ways Aware technology. The Snapdragon 855 is the latest flagship chipset of Qualcomm and strongest SoC over all the chipsets of Qualcomm. In terms of AI, the Helio P90 outperforms Snapdragon 855 on AI Benchmarking Scores, so there is no comparison of MediaTek Helio P90 with Snapdragon 670 because it will easily beat it in the case of AI processing.

So in terms of AI, MediaTek Helio P90 is a much better chipset than Snapdragon 670.

Helio P90 vs Snapdragon 670 Camera, RAM and Storage

Camera

Moving to the camera department, here Snapdragon 670 has the Qualcomm Spectra 250 image sensor processor which is capable to handle up to 16MP dual cameras with MFNR & ZSL at 30fps and up to 25MP single camera sensor at 30fps with MFNR and ZSL. It also can go up to 48MP with MFNR only and up to 192MP by compromising with both MFNR and ZSL.

While on the other side, MediaTek Helio P90 has support for a single camera up to 48MP at 30fps with ZSD and dual camera up to 16MP at 120fps. Video recording features of both SoCs are the same.

RAM and Storage

Here the Helio P90 has support for 16 Bit Dual-Channel LPDDR4X RAM up to 8GB clocked at 1866MHz and storage type of UFS 2.1. While Snapdragon 670 also has support for the same 16 Bit Dual-Channel LPDDR4X RAM up to 8GB clocked at 1866MHz and storage type of UFS 2.1.

Display

In the case of display, both SoCs have support for up to Full HD+ displays where the Helio P90 supports a maximum display resolution of 2520 x 1080 and Snapdragon 670 can support a resolution of up to 2560×1600 pixels.

Connectivity Features

Connectivity-wise, Snapdragon 670 got the company’s Snapdragon X12 LTE Modem which helps it to achieve a maximum downloading speed of 600Mbps using LTE Cat.12 and an uploading speed of up to 150Mbps using LTE Cat.13. Speaking of its other features, it has Dual-band WiFi, VoWiFi, Dual 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS, USB 3.1, USB-C and Quick Charge 4+ technology for fast charging.

At the same time, MediaTek Helio P90 is also capable to achieve a maximum downloading speed of 600Mbps using LTE Cat.12 and an uploading speed of up to 150Mbps using LTE Cat.13. It also includes other features like Dual 4G VoLTE, WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, FM Radio, GPS, etc.

Conclusion:-

As you have seen, MediaTek Helio P90 has better CPU and AI performance than Snapdragon 670 while the GPU of Snapdragon 670 is better than the GPU of Helio P90. The AI performance of all chipsets of MediaTek is great. MediaTek focuses on AI in its all mid-range and upper mid-range chipsets because of which they can easily beat their competitors. So in overall comparison, the MediaTek Helio P90 is ahead over Snapdragon 670.
